PAKISTANS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GREAT BRITAIN AND COMMONWEALTH

Q: How successful was Pakistan in its relationship with Great Britain and the commonwealth between 1947 and 1988? Explain your answer.

Ans:  Pakistan maintained good relations with Great Britain and Commonwealth. After independence, the British held Jinnah at two levels of both the military and civil service. There were many senior British officers like General Douglas Gracy in the Pakistan army to train them along modern lines. lt also gove financial and technical aid and advice to cope with difficulties, Pakistan chooses to remain a member of CommonWealth as it was now a British dominion. Thus this made the relations better with Britain and CommonWealth.

In CommonWealth meeting in 1950 in colombo, the Colombo plan was setup to extend aid to Pakistan. It also provided one Million sterling pounds for sui Gas Project. Canada gave $40 Million for development of Railways, thus this made the relations better.

Although in 1954-1955 Pakistan and British agreed to work together as member of SEATO and CENTO,which were and communist ideologies to curtail the Russian Expansion, thus this made relations better between both countries.

However during the 1980's Britian remained a major trading partner of Pakistan an estimated 376 Million Sterling pounds worth trade between two countries by 1986. In the 1990's Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif continued to pay visits to Great Britan to strengthen mutual relations.

Although Pakistan has been an active participant of Common wealth Games. The Queen of England visited Pakistan on Aug 14,1997 to attend the Golden Jubilee ceremony of the Creation of  Pakistan. She was accorded very warm welcome. Presence of a sizeable Pakistani population in England has also played an important role in improving the relations. Some of these pakistanis managed to get elected in British parliment thus this paved a way for better relation between both  countries.

However, the Relations between two states witnessed failure too. Many Pakistani army officer were not happy with the British officers in their ranks and some of them unsuccessfully tried a military coup in 1951. Pakistani Government also had reservations about the Radcliffe award.
